OWOSSO - Former industrialist and long-time community booster George Hoddy donated and then watched as dozens of items he owned were auctioned off Thursday night to benefit the Shiawassee Arts Center's education fund.

The sale, at the Gould House on North Washington Street, saw dozens of people attend for a glimpse at Hoddy's collection of furniture and antiques and a chance to take something home.

Piper Brewer, Arts Center executive director, said more than half the items sold Thursday. She did not know exactly how much money was raised for the fund.

" If everyone would stop presuming to know the real Mr. Hoddy and look at him as a fellow citizen they would see a man who despite being 104 and needing the money for himself ( yes folks he really does need it) he still giving to a town he loves for causes he feels strongly about. After the way he has been talked about I don't understand why but then he looks for the good and he usually finds it. "

" George at over 103 years old, he's doing something right. Maybe it would not hurt to just smile when you see a neighbor and say hi more to a stranger instead of being stuck up like some Owosso residents are and love life. Maybe that is due to leadership. George is a bright bulb in a dim town. "
