Hornet spikers make it four straight GAC Blue titles

BURTON - New Lothrop captured its fourth straight Genesee Area Conference Blue Division volleyball crown Saturday.
The Hornets (50-10-3 overall) have now won the conference nine times out of the last 10 years. New Lothrop finished 11-2 in the conference and went 3-0 in Saturday's league tournament.
“I have high expectations for my team,” said New Lothrop head coach Sheri Warner. “I can't say we played our absolute best today. But we're hoping we saved it for Monday when we play in the districts (8 p.m. at Reese) against a very good Reese team.”
New Lothrop Saturday's league meet at Burton Bendle with a 25-20, 25-5 victory over the Tigers.
The Hornets then downed Byron 25-22, 17-25, 15-9 in the double-elimination affair.
New Lothrop then met up with the Eagles again in the finals, beating them 25-18, 18-25, 15-5.
Rachelle Kviz totaled 29 kills, nine aces, 20 digs and one block for the Hornets. Monica Confer delivered 34 kills, 11 digs, six blocks and three aces. Kayla Henige added 54 assists, five aces, three blocks and 14 digs.
New Lothrop was also bolstered by Hilary Krupp, with 26 digs and three aces, and Jennifer Birchmeier, with 11 digs and four aces.
Byron finished second overall in the final GAC Blue standings.
The Eagles went 3-1 on the day, beating Burton Bentley 25-6, 25-17 and Burton Atherton twice.
Byron beat Atherton the first time 25-19, 25-14. In the second go-around, the Eagles stopped the Wolverines 25-22, 25-17.
In between those matches, Byron fell to New Lothrop.
Moriah Thompson had 32 kills, 30 digs, seven blocks and four aces for the Eagles. Kelsey Philburn had 22 kills, 35 digs, six aces and two blocks. Rebekah Lahring added 78 assists.
