CARSON CITY - Chesaning's Trevor Denton ran to a regional cross country title as did the Indians Saturday here at the Division 3 meet at Fish Creek Sportsman Club.

Denton ran first in 16 minutes, 7 seconds. He was over six seconds faster than runner-up Caleb Rhynard of Shepherd. St. Louis' Brayden Border was third in 16:32.1.

The Indians were first with 79 points. Stockbridge was second with 102 and Lansing Catholic Central was third with 119.

“We've never done this before,” said Chesaning coach Jon Malcolm. “We've never qualified for the states as a team. This is huge. It's a giant step for our program.”

The top three teams automatically qualify for the state finals as a team.

Laingsburg's Mark List was fourth in 16:36.0. Other area runners to make the top 15 and automatically qualify for the state finals were Perry's John Bell (sixth, 16:41.4); Perry's Jake Fortman (eighth, 16:45.0); Chesaning's Brandon Bishop (10th, 16:58.2); Perry's Justin Krauss (11th, 17:01.8); and Chesaning's Rob Kovach (13th, 17:10.9).

Chesaning's other scorers were Brandon Beckman (22nd, 17:44) and John Forsyth (33rd, 18:15).

Perry, which ran fifth with 132 points, also featured Jessy Metzmaker (50th, 18:43) and Tyler Neros (57th, 18:56).

Laingsburg was 14th with 299 points. The Wolfpack's Joshua Barnhart ran 64th in 19:13. He was trailed by teammates Adam Stewart (65th, 19:20), Zachary Little (71st, 19:32) and Grant Voisinet (95th, 21:33).

Ovid-Elsie finished 15th with 322. Marques Horak paced the Marauders by running 34th in 18:16. Mike Strieff was 45th in 18:38 while Trenton Garlock was 52nd in 18:45. Other scorers were Alex Green (92nd, 21:20) and Tyler Stanfield (99th, 22:00).

In the girls' regional race at Carson City-Crystal, Laingsburg's Amaya Ayers ran third overall in 19:34.2. Megan Heeder of Lansing Catholic was first in 19:06.0 and Audrey Tremaine of Leslie was second in 19:25.7.

Also running in the top 15 to qualify for the states as individuals were area runners Chantelle Fondren of Chesaning (eighth, 20:02.8), Jordan Krauss of Perry (ninth, 20:11.0) and Kylie Parker of Perry (13th, 20:24.7).

Leslie won the regional title with 50 points with Lansing Catholic (99) and Portland (101) running second and third, respectively.

Perry just missed qualifying for the states as a team. The Ramblers matched Portland's 101 total but it went to the sixth runner tiebreaker to decide which team would make it to states. That edge went to Portland. The Ramblers were thus officially in fourth place.

Chesaning was eighth with 183 while Laingsburg ran 10th with 260. Ovid-Elsie did not have a full team for a score.

Perry's Karla Graves ran 22nd in 20:57. Ramblers Julia Young and Lisa Rosado ran 26th and 31st with respective times of 21:30 and 21:44.

Chesaning's Raven Franks was 34th in 21:50. Indian teammate Heather Shephard was 36th in 21:52. Kaitlyn Eurich ran 51st (22:20) and Jackie Albosta was 56th (22:40).

Laingsburg's other scorers included Stephanie Hoover (55th, 22:27), Tara Borris (59th, 22:56), Kellci Ghiata (74th, 23:51) and Nadia Olajas (75th, 23:57).

Ovid-Elsie's Jenny Frantz ran 50th in 22:17. Teammates Jessica Frantz (71st) and Lauren Ekel (79th) ran 23:35 and 24:07, respectively.
