Durand gets past Perry, Chesaning advances

OVID-ELSIE - Durand and Chesaning each collected first-round volleyball victories here at the Class B district tournament Monday night.
The Railroaders ousted Perry 25-16, 25-17, 25-16 while the Indians won the late first-round match, beating Ovid-Elsie 25-19, 25-21, 27-25.
Durand improved to 33-12-4 and earned the right to advance to Wednesday's district semifinal against Saginaw Swan Valley at 5:30 p.m. at Ovid-Elsie High School.
The Railroaders were spearheaded by senior Brooke Hitchings, with 17 kills, and sophomore Riley Robbins, with 12 kills. Meghan Drobish had 36 digs and Kristen Long delivered 38 assists.
“We were missing one of our hitters (due to sickness) but we stepped up tonight,” said Durand coach Brent Maynor. “We have a big match coming up against Swan Valley.”
Jenny Dykeman had six kills, 15 digs and two blocks for Perry (10-36-7). Tessa Lairmore had four kills and nine assists while Jordan Busse had four kills and 14 digs. Adding 15 digs was Erin McCumby.
Chesaning defeated Ovid-Elsie in three straight games to advance to Wednesday's other semifinal at 7 p.m. vs. Corunna (12-24-6).
Chesaning featured Sabrina Aguilar's seven kills, 15 digs, three aces and three blocks. Natascha Pickering had 15 digs, two kills, one ace and one block. Kali Gross and Erica Toma had 12 digs and nine digs, respectively while Toma added 41 assists.
“It was an OK night,” said Chesaning coach Pam Wesley. “ ... We didn't really play up to our potential but we will be ready for a very competitive Corunna team. We really have to step our playing.”
The Marauders ended the season with a 9-27-3 record. They were led by Kim Fox and Ashlyn Weller, each with 19 digs. Katie Fabus had three kills while Fox and Sydney Dean each had three aces. Caitlin Montague had three blocks and Dean also contributed 13 assists.
“We were competitive in each set,” said Ovid-Elsie coach Doug Long. “Our serving let us down, which has been our strong point all year. We missed 12 serves as a team.”
