NewsBancroft DPW construction completeBy MICHAEL PETERSON Argus-Press Staff WriterBANCROFT - Bancroft village officials have finished the construction of the new Department of Public Works equipment building, after being in the works for about two years.
Construction for the building started in July. The total costs were about $110,000, Village President Tanya Buckelew said. “We hadn't had a new building in years,” Buckelew said. “It's too small. We've outgrown it.” On Wednesday, the village held an open house for residents to see the new addition. The new 50-by-60 square-foot building, located at 120 Warren Street, is connected to the DPW building by a breezeway. Inside the breezeway a glass display case was constructed, containing old and new pictures as well as village artifacts. “In the digging up of the new building, we found a 1912 license plate,” Tom Buckelew, the DPW Supervisor and husband to Tanya Buckelew, said. “Just odds and ends that we have come across.” Other items displayed include an old history book, the ball-top of Bancroft's old bell tower and a 1950's clock that was donated by the Byron DPW. The Village Council began talks of the building about two years ago. In November of 2007, it began budgeting away the money needed and received bids. No money had to be borrowed because all the funding needed was budgeted accordingly. Because of space restrictions, the DPW building was not where the village's equipment and salt were previously stored. They were kept in a old equipment building located on Shiawassee Street. However, that building is now being used solely as a salt barn. “It's an issue having salt and equipment in the same building - getting oxidation on our equipment and what not,” Tanya Buckelew said. However, another reason for the new equipment building was is to add a bathroom to the DPW. “The (Department of Environmental Quality) have been after us for years because we didn't have a bathroom in here,” Tom Buckelew said. “It is a public building, and being a municipality you've got to have a handicapped-accessible bathroom.” Bancroft's old water tower was standing where the new building is located, but was torn down a couple years back. “It's just been a vacant lot since, with the intentions of putting a building there,” Tanya Buckelew said. The contractors who did the bulk of the construction were Intrepid Builders and Triple “C” Construction, both based in Bancroft. Other contributors were: Center State Electric, Dan Martin Plumbing, Lennox Heating and Cooling, Gabbard Overhead Door, Ezinga Eavestroughs and Mehay Brick. Tom Buckelew said he thought the construction process “could not have gone more smoothly.” - Contact Michael Peterson at 725-5136 extension 223 or mpetersonarguspress@gmail.com. |
