Durand's Madrigal paces field at home

DURAND - Durand's new cross country course, which featured its share of rolling hills, seemed to challenge the field of runners at Tuesday's season-opening Durand Cross Country Invitational.

But Railroader junior standout David Madrigal III made himself right at home, winning the 3.1-mile race in 16 minutes, 32 seconds.

Madrigal was an All-Stater last spring in track and finished 15th in the state a year ago in cross country. His father and Durand coach David Madrigal was impressed Tuesday.

“It was a course that I designed and it's a tough course,” said the Railroader coach. “We had some elite runners here today. They have run times 30 and 40 seconds faster than they did today over the summer.”

Joe Maki of Flint Powers Catholic placed second in 16:54.85.

The Chargers won the boys' title with 41 points. Linden was second at 95 while Durand, which won its first league title in cross country in 19 seasons in 2007, was third at 112. Goodrich placed fourth with 131 points while Frankenmuth was fifth at 150 and Owosso sixth at 171.

Chesaning (176), Byron (190), Standish-Sterling (216), Almont (224), Bath (230), New Lothrop (354) and Flint International Academy (no team score) rounded out the field.

Owosso sophomore Kieran McClintock ran fourth in 17:51. Teammate Drew Delong was 36th in 20:24.22, Patrick Matheny was 38th in 20:41.68, Alex Bronson ran 41st in 20:59.11 and Zack Paez was 42nd in 21:01.75.

Durand's Tyler Jenkins finished seventh in 18:28.25 while Kelsey Myers ran 13th (18:42.62). Miles Drobish was 44th in 21:07.18 and Mitchell Fiebernitz was 47th.

For Chesaning, Trevor Denton ran eighth in 18:29.13 while Brandon Bishop streaked 28th in 19:29.53 and J. Forsyth ran 30th in 19:41.39. R. Kovach followed 43rd in 21:03 and Terry Bishop was 69th in 23:11.

Byron's Joe Whaley flashed 11th in 18:35. Eli Forbush ran 25th for the Eagles in 19:22.72. Cody Engisch ran 35th in 20:21.0 while Caleb Swedorski was 58th and Devin Maass ran 61st.

New Lothrop was led by Dakota Allen, who covered the course 52nd in 21:29. Jordan Vincke finished the race 66th in 22:44.02 while Josh Schiefer ran 23:57, Jared Crawford ran 24:08 and Mitch Delemeester ran 24:10.

n Flint Powers Catholic reigned as the girls' champion with 31 points. Goodrich ran second with 57 points while Linden, with 99 points, placed third.

Rounding out the field were Frankenmuth, fourth with 153; Standish-Sterling, fifth with 171; Byron, sixth with 172; Owosso, seventh with 182; Bath, eighth with 185; and New Lothrop, ninth with 203.

Taylor Pogue of Goodrich was the girls' champ, running first in 19:38.87.

Owosso's girls were paced by sophomore Chloe Gilbert, eighth in 22:13. Teammate Lindsay Clark was 33rd in 24:11.65 while Monica Bird was 43rd in 26:03 and Sophie Brady was 44th in 26:04. Joyce Westbrook was 54th.

Byron's Karli Dooling raced 17th in 23:03. Rachel Lahring was 25th in 23:33.28, Emily Klender ran 41st in 25:56, Katie Klender was 42nd in 25:57 and Allyssa Richardson was 47th in 26:13.21.

New Lothrop's Emily Vincke was 19th in 23:09, Ashey Root finished 36th in 25:08, Krystal Brown ran 40th in 25:33, Rachel Vincke finished 51st in 26:36 and Kelsey Bacon ran 57th in 27:59.

Chesaning's Chantelle Fondren finished 34th in 24:32.7. H. Shephard was 45th in 26:05 while Carlie Zervan was 62nd in 29:21.2 and Kaylee Turnwald was 63rd in 29:21.

Durand's T. Fagan was 46th in 26:07. Cecily Burton was 55th in 27:48.

Morrice's Michelle Rundell ran 61st in 29:19.68.
