Obituaries
Nelson William Bivens
Age 88, of Durand, passed away Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, at the Durand Senior Care and Rehab Center.
Mr. Bivens worked for General Motors, retiring from the Chevrolet Local 659 Plant in Flint in 1986.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at the United Methodist Church, 10016 E. Newburg Road, Durand, with Pastor John Walworth officiating. The family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m.
Nelson was born Dec. 15, 1919, in Durand, the son of Asa and Alice (Green) Bivens. He served his country in the U.S. Army, both during World War II and the Korean War, during which he received the Bronze Star for his services.
On May 25, 1945, he married Nora Parry in Norwich, England, and together would raise three children. He was a member of the Durand VFW Post 2272 and the Durand United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: his wife of 63 years, Nora; three children, Sheila Stafford of Traverse City, Gwen (Al) Deitering of Seattle, Wash., and Mark Bivens of Valley Center, Calif.; three grandsons, Jerel, Gryson and Craig; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
