DURAND - City Clerk Amy Roddy will get an additional $400 per week to act as interim city manager.

The City Council approved the measure as an addition to her normal salary at Monday's meeting.

Roddy has served as the interim city manager after Lynn Markland left to become the city manager for Fenton.

“We are getting two-for-one right now,” council member Deborah Doyle said. “I am comfortable with $400. It is not as high as the previous city manager made, and she's doing both jobs.”

Markland was Durand city manager for 15 years. He accepted a job as Fenton city manager in May and began July 14.

Roddy was named the interim city manager June 16 by a 4-2 vote, with council member Tina Hildebrandt and Mayor Pro-Tem Kenneth McDonough dissenting.

The pay increase was decided after a discussion among council members.

Council member Brian Boggs said Roddy should be given $500 a week, but most council members agreed that was too high.

“I agree she should be compensated for her work, but that is too high,” Doyle said. “However, she has done a great job.”

McDonough enthusiastically agreed.

“She is keeping us very well-informed - better than we did before,” McDonough said. “The city council as a whole really does appreciate being informed and getting information to us.”

The additional $400 a week will be retroactive from the day she took over as the interim city manager until her last official day. Roddy's city clerk salary is currently $53,561 a year.

The city manager job posting has been listed on the Michigan Municipal League and International City/County Management Association Web sites, but Roddy said they are waiting until after the primary elections before going full-force.

“We are waiting to see who the new city council member will be,” Roddy said. “And we won't know who that is until (Tuesday) night.”

n The council also approved two bid awards to repair damage from hail. D.N. West Enterprises in Flint submitted the low bid of about $24,000 to repair the roofs of the Department of Public Works garage, the Lions Park pavilion, the Lions Park watch tower, Optimist Park north and south pavilions and the Trumble Park pavilion and restroom.

Byron-based J.R. Davis was awarded the bid to repair damage to the Durand Fire Station and the Durand Wastewater Treatment Plant. Its bid was about $7,000.

Both repairs are being covered by Durand's insurance carrier, Meadowbrook Insurance Group.

n R & R Fire Truck Repair, Inc., of Northville, was awarded the bid to repair one of Durand's fire trucks. Repairs to unit 602 are to replace the rear springs, as well as the pump packing. The bid was for almost $5,000.
